French tennis physiotherapist Patrick Bordier died of sudden cardiac arrest during the Rio Olympics. And what is worse, German swimmer Sarah Köhler observed how one thing after another went wrong: the first aiders clearly didn’t know how to correctly resuscitate, so the swimmer and her boy friend got involved and demanded to call a doctor and a defibrillator. And even though Patrikc Bordier had collapsed right at the entrance into the Olympic village, even 30 minutes later neither had arrived.
Köhler’s summary of the event gives a devastating impression: “Things might be different in Brasil but wherever that many people are gathered as here during the Olympics, having enough public defibrillators should be a given”.
