What are ticks apart from being annoying bloodsuckers?

Ticks are spider-like animals that can transmit various diseases with their bite, they are “only” carriers. They live in undergrowth, and on forest edges, clearings, forest paths and forest hedges with lush and high grass, shrubs, bushes, and scrubland. They crawl up from the ground on to plants to about 1.5 m high. They do not fall from trees or bushes. In Switzerland, ticks are found abundantly in many areas in altitudes of up to approx. 2000m above sea level.

Ticks can transmit many different diseases. The main ones in Switzerland are

  • Lyme Disease (in German Borreliose) and
  • Tick-Borne Encephalitis TBE, in German FSME (Frühsommer-Meningoenzephalitis)
